Art & Artifacts

There are many fine paintings as well as impressive items of furniture, long case clocks, silver and porcelain to be found at the Hall. Now that Bedroom Number 9 has been converted into a gallery, it will be possible to display the silver and porcelain, on a rotating basis, to their best advantage.

As to the furniture, there are pieces from the Jacobean, Georgian and Regency periods. There are items by both Chippendale and Hepplewhite specially commissioned by Sir John, 6th baronet — most probably for his residence in London. At first they would have been intended for his house in Scakville Street, prior to his taking a lease on a property in Berkeley Square in 1794.

Among the paintings are works by George Stubbs ARA, Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA (President of the Royal Academy), Joseph Wright of Derby, John Downman and Melchior de Hondecouter. There is also a wide range of works by Dutch artists from the 17th and 18th centuries.
