This stylised twenty-first century interpretation of the central motif of the Nelthorpe family crest is accompanied by the motto “Fortitudine”. This roughly translates as “Through Tenacity” — it’s a pretty fair description of the family’s response to the vagaries of history over the last four hundred or so years! No one knows where the original coat of arms came from — not even the College of Arms — but in 1634, during one of the Herald’ periodic visits to the county, Richard Nelthorpe was granted the right to use this coat of arms and was judged to be a member of the gentry, with five generations of the same preceding him!
We welcome your comments on the visitor experience to both the Hall and Gardens, including any helpful suggestions as to improvements we might be able to make — within the constraints of a Grade I listing.
Equally, we positively welcome feedback on the website itself. The Hall may be relatively small in “stately home” terms, but there is a huge amount of recorded history attached and much to see.
